Here are some pictures from my trip to Eastern Oregon at the end of June 2016:
Some general pictures, more or less in the order taken:
- Most two-lane roads in rural Oregon are posted 65 mph, a rather scary speed for two cars to pass by each other on a non-divided roadway. But Nevada does one better. 70 mph on this rather narrow two-lane Route 140!
- And you don't want to break down along this stretch! I met 29 cars in my hour or so on this 81 mile stretch. I only passed two houses!
- Along route 140
- You might wonder why I would bother to take a picture of the middle of the road, but I found these striations in the pavement to be a real nuisance. They are a great safety measure, but I like to hug the middle line, at least when there are no vehicles coming the other way, (I wouldn't want to hit that loose gravel edge going 70 mph!) and the roar is nerve-rattling when the tires hit them. (My kitty very much agrees, as he lunges under the seat to hide!)
- Dry lands along Route 140
- Dry lands along Route 140
- Hang gliding anyone? I couldn't get a picture that would capture the height, but it must be quite a rush when one jumps off these cliffs at Doherty Rim hundreds of feet over the valley below!
- A huge tree stump? Oh no, it's Squaw Butte, Rt. 140
- A three-shot panorama, left-to-right, of Summer Lake: Left
, Middle, Right
- And more dry territory
Crater Lake:

The main purpose of the trip was to check out renewable energy sites, such as wind farms. Here are some of those pics:
