Finding Her Way Back
An explorer left her camp and travelled one mile south, one mile east and one mile north to arrive back at camp. She did NOT start from the North Pole! Where did she start from?
Answer:
Any point 1.16 miles from the South Pole.
Explanation: 0.16 miles happens to be the radius of a circle one mile in circumference, (C = 2 x pi x r, therefore 1 = 2 x 3.14 x r, therefore r = 1 / (2 x 3.14 = 0.16 [to the nearest hundredth]), so she would travel one mile toward the pole, one mile in a circle around the pole, leaving her in position to retrace the first one mile leg back to camp.
