1 Samuel -- Chapter 13

[31] The Philistines fought against Israel and whooped their asses! They pursued Saul and his sons and killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. The fighting grew fierce and Saul was critically wounded.

Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and kill me; otherwise these unmutilated men will run me through and abuse me," but his armor-bearer was afraid and would not do it, so Saul fell on top of his own sword. When his armor-bearer saw that he was dead he did the same and died with him.

When the Israelites along the valley and across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and Saul and his sons were dead they abandoned their towns and fled, and the Philistines came in and occupied them.

The next day the Philistines went out to strip the dead and found Saul and his sons. They cut off Saul's head, stripped off his armor and sent messengers thoughout their land to proclaim the news. They put his armor in the temple of the Ashteroths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.

When the people of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done their valiant men marched to Beth Shan, took down Saul's and his sons' bodies, and took them to Jabesh, where they burned them. They buried their bones under a tamarisk tree in Jabesh and fasted for seven days.
