Dangerous Living
At current rates, how long would it take for as many people to die from drunk driving on our nation's highways as die in a year from tobacco?

Answer: 41 years.

Calculation: According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco use is responsible for about 443,000 deaths per year (about one of every five deaths) in the United States. As opposed to this, 10,839 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. 443,000 / 10,839 = 41. Furthermore, it is estimated that 49,000 of these tobacco-related deaths are the result of secondhand smoke exposure, so it would take about 4 1/2 years for drunk drivers to kill just those who are killed by other people's smoke! Still feel like having that cigarette?
