Across the Ocean

A man wishes to walk from the southern tip of South America to the southern tip of Africa on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. No one is willing to build a bridge all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, and it is doubtful that he would ever make it wearing "pontoon shoes". How can he do it? (Lining up a string of boats or other floating objects and walking across them amounts to building a bridge, so that's not allowed. Sorry!)

Answer:

He could walk north all the way from the southern tip of South America to the edge of the Bering Strait in Alaska. If he times it so that he arrives there in winter, when the Strait freezes over, he could, if he was lucky, walk across to Russia. (Yes, it would be dangerous, because the straight does not freeze over solidly, but he might make it, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt.) Then he could simply walk across Asia, cross into Africa going through the Suez/Sinai area, and walk to the southern tip of the continent. This distance would probably be longer than the circumference of the earth, so he might want to buy an extra pair of shoes! To see this in perspective you might wish to see the Dymaxion Air Ocean World Map , produced by Buckminster Fuller.
